Drive Shell

Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 16, 2026

Drive Shell is a Windows desktop application (built with WinUI) that shows you a summary of your Microsoft OneDrive storage usage. This Privacy Policy explains what information the app accesses, how it is used, and the choices you have. By signing in and using Drive Shell, you agree to the practices described below.

The short version

  • We only read your basic Microsoft profile and your OneDrive storage totals — never the contents of your files.
  • Sign-in uses Microsoft’s secure browser-based login. We never see or store your password.
  • Your information is used only to display your storage summary on your own device.

1. Information we access

To show your storage summary, Drive Shell accesses a limited set of information from your Microsoft account through the official Microsoft identity platform and the Microsoft Graph API:

  • Account sign-in. You authenticate with your Microsoft email account using Microsoft’s secure, browser-based sign-in (OAuth 2.0). Drive Shell never sees, receives, or stores your password.
  • Basic profile information. Your name and account email/username, used to show which account is signed in.
  • OneDrive storage details. Read-only storage metadata such as your total, used, and remaining (quota) space.

Drive Shell does not access, open, read, download, modify, or store the contents of your files or folders.

2. How we use your information

The information above is used for a single purpose: to calculate and display your OneDrive storage summary inside the app on your device. We do not use it for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to the app’s functionality, and we do not sell or rent your information to anyone.

3. Where your information is stored

Drive Shell processes your storage summary locally on your Windows device. The app does not send your profile or storage data to any servers operated by the developer; the requests go directly from your device to Microsoft’s services.

To keep you signed in between sessions, your authentication tokens are cached securely on your device by the Microsoft Authentication Library (MSAL). These tokens stay on your device and are removed when you sign out or uninstall the app.

4. Permissions we request

When you sign in, Microsoft shows you the exact permissions Drive Shell requests before you consent. The app asks only for read-only access needed to display your storage summary — typically the right to read your basic profile and your OneDrive storage information. Drive Shell does not request permission to write to, share, or delete anything in your account.

5. Third-party services

Drive Shell relies on Microsoft’s identity platform and Microsoft Graph for authentication and data access. Your use of these services is also governed by the Microsoft Privacy Statement. Drive Shell does not integrate any advertising networks or third-party analytics SDKs that track you.

6. Your choices and controls

  • Sign out. Signing out of Drive Shell clears the cached session from your device.
  • Revoke access. You can review and revoke Drive Shell’s access at any time from your Microsoft account at account.live.com/consent/Manage.
  • Uninstall. Removing the app from Windows removes its locally stored data, including cached tokens.

7. Data security

Authentication is handled entirely by Microsoft’s identity platform, and access tokens are stored using the protections provided by your operating system and MSAL. While no method of electronic storage is completely secure, Drive Shell is designed to minimize the data it touches and to keep that data on your device.

8. Children's privacy

Drive Shell is not directed to children and is not intended for use by anyone under the age required to hold a Microsoft account in their region. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of Drive Shell after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
